Historically, traveling by horseback was the ultimate way to broaden one's horizons, learn important life lessons, and connect with neighboring communities. At Shepherd's House, we treat our horses as part of the family, raising them with deep care so they can share the beauty of our homeland with you. Joining us on a ride means you are not just taking a tour, but actively participating in a living, breathing tradition that connects generations.
There is a famous Kyrgyz proverb: "While you have a horse, get to know the people; while your father is alive, get to know the land." This highlights the ancient belief that riding out into the world on a carefully chosen horse was essential for a child to learn about different cultures and gain true wisdom.
The traditional Kyrgyz horse is a unique mountain breed developed over 4,000 years of natural selection in harsh, high-altitude conditions. They possess incredible stamina, confidently navigating steep rocky paths, crossing rushing rivers, and covering up to 100 kilometers a day without tiring.
These remarkable animals live outdoors in herds all year round, perfectly adapted to the thin air and low atmospheric pressure of the majestic peaks. They are incredibly self-reliant and sure-footed, making them the safest and most reliable partners for exploring the dramatic cliffs and deep valleys.
