For generations, making felt carpets has been a cherished communal activity for Kyrgyz women, a time to share stories, pass down wisdom, and create comfort for their families. At Shepherd's House, we warmly invite you into this circle to experience the true meaning of collective labor. Whether you are laying out soft, colorful wool on a traditional chiy mat or mastering the unique stitching techniques, you will be guided by the loving hands of our experienced craftswomen. By the end of the day, you will not just have learned a craft; you will have connected deeply with the welcoming soul of the Kyrgyz people.
The creation of a Shyrdak carpet uses a unique technique where a craftswoman cuts a pattern from two felt layers simultaneously. This ensures not a single precious hair of wool is wasted, creating two absolutely symmetrical and harmonious worlds
The quality of the felt highly depends on the time of year the sheep are sheared. Spring wool is valued for its softness and elasticity, while the coarser autumn wool gives the final piece its incredible strength and durability.
Every single curl and ornament in a traditional Ala-Kiyiz or Shyrdak carries a hidden meaning and an encrypted history of the people. The unique technique of embedding one pattern into another symbolizes unity and harmony.

Sitting with the local women, feeling the warm wool in my hands, and watching the ancient patterns come to life was pure magic. I brought home a beautiful piece of felt, but more importantly, a piece of their incredible warmth.
